De vele slijmstoffen wellen in water en binden daarmee een grote hoeveelheden water (tot 1:8) in de darm. Dat brengt de spijsvertering in volle gang. Lijnzaad heeft echter nog meer te bieden: zijn hoge vetgehalte (40%) bestaat overwegend uit onverzadigde vetzuren en bevat zeer veel omega-3-vetzuren. Alleen het blauwzuur bevattende glycoside beperkt de hoeveelheid lijnzaad die je kunt geven. Maar zoals Paracelsus in de Middeleeuwen al vaststelde bepaald de hoeveelheid of iets giftig is.
